Aztec and other Mexican Dances.

By Diego Rodriguez Castañeda

Mexican dances come from all the different regions of Mexico. The Tlacolorero e.g. is a typical rural dance from Guerrero. The Dance of the Deer comes from the northern Mexican Yaqui tribe. It symbolizes the deer hunt. At the end of the performance the deer dies. Mexican dances performed by the Aztec dance group Ollinayacaxtli on the Zocalo in Mexico City’s center include: the Sun Dance, The Pigeon Dance, the Rabbit Dance, the Quetzalcoatl Dance  and the Fire Dance. Totonacs also have their typical dances.

All these Mexican dances are pre-Hispanic. They existed long before the Spaniards arrived. They were  (and still are) performed on special occasions like religious festivals, inauguration ceremonies, weddings, births, before or after a war or on any other important social, religious or political event.

After the Spaniards conquered Mexico they introduced their regional dances. These blended with local influences and evolved into the regional folkloric dances. The most popular regional Mexican dances come from the states of  Jalisco and Veracruz. Some of the most famous are: El Tilingo Lingo, La Tortuga and la Culebra
