One of the best ways to discover what Australia has to offers; it’s to rent or to buy a campervan. This way of traveling give you a freedom and independence you won’t be able to get with public bus or airplane. However, time to time you won’t have other choice that jump in a flight considering the huge distance between cities in this country.

Living in Asia for more than seven years now, I couldn’t resist visiting Australia for the second time. But I had to ask myself how it would be better to travel inside this huge country. If you want to travel by bus or by train, they offer some good combination tickets with possibility to drop in and out everywhere you wish. However, it is not easy to get these tickets for the train. Since the train does not cover the part of Australia we wanted to visit, we forgot this option. Traveling by bus seems attractive from the budget point of view, but we would have to reserve hotel or backpackers at least few days before the check-in; with the risk to have long wait before get any reservation. Additionally you will have to synchronize it with your bus day departure. In the outback, you don’t get buses everyday. This solution seems only possible if you have very long holiday. Of course, you can planned all your trip in advance include hotel and backpackers reservation, but you won’t get a lot of flexibility during the trip. One small mistake in the planning or any trouble and you will miss something important. So we decide that this trip will be more enjoyable with our own vehicle.

Planned the trip was an important part, especially for booking the campervan. If you do it long time in advance, the chance to get the one you like and also to get cheaper rate will be much higher; especially during the high season. In case you decide to buy a campervan, you will probably make some research on the internet before getting there, but of course you will have to wait to see the vehicle before making any deal.

Some others factors are important to consider when you want to buy your own vehicle. First, you have to make sure you have enough time for the all trip plus some extra time to sell it back. Check also if the city where you want to buy it have lower market price than the city where you want to drop it off. For sample, you would better choose to travel from Perth to Darwin instead of Darwin to Perth, since the price for the vehicle in Darwin are more expensive than most of others big city in Australia. Basically, more the city is isolated more the price has chance to grow up. Another point to consider is to have some mechanical knowledge of vehicle, you never know in which condition you will buy the car.

If you opt for the rental option, basically you will have to choose between three categories of vehicle: campervan, 4WD or standard 2WD car. The last two required to have additional camping facilities such as tents or mattress in the back of the car. Eventually you can stay in the hotel or backpackers for few nights. Some 4WD offers campervan possibility as well, but with limited facilities. The campervan seems to be the option which offers most flexibility and freedom. The 2WD campervan is cheaper than the 4WD, but you won’t be able to get to the entire road. So, you will have to seriously consider what you want to visit during your trip. The expenses of a 4WD rental campervan can seem very high, but you will probably safe money on many organized trip to unsealed area if you are willing to drive in the outback by yourself.
