Some Indian Art and Jewellery Forms.

By Shiva Rao

The art of India is  varied and impressive. Indian architecture is extraordinary and the mixture of  different styles has created works of great refinement. Shah Jahan has made the most enduring mark on architectural history with his Red Fort and the Taj Mahal in Agra. The Taj Mahal almost became a symbol for art of India.

The art of India is the deepest representation of culture and is accessible at different levels. Whether you go to a classical dance, enjoy Carnatic or Hindustani music, admire woodwork, buy ceramics, incense, jewellery, textiles or rugs, it’s all art. Even the Indian cuisine can be enjoyed as an art of cooking.

Ceramics is an underestimated art form of India. Beautiful pots and jars of various kinds are created on the wheel, and afterwards skilfully decorated with glaze. Votive offerings, like terracotta horses and other creatures, idols of various descriptions and even replicas of parts of the human body, are also part of the potter’s repertoire.

Indian jewellery is generally made from silver, gold and white metal.  It is mostly sold by weight. There is a very high demand  and ‘consumption’ of gold in the country. Because of this gold and products made from it are expensive there. Indian jewellery can be bought in many tourist places like Delhi, Agra or Jaipur.

Silver jewellery is the most typical and traditional. The folk art  from Rajasthan, for example, is interesting. It can be bought in many shops all over the country, but it’s cheaper and easier to buy it in Rajasthan itself .Gemstone jewellery  from India is well known all over the world. A large quantity of the stones is mined and cut in the country itself. Indian craftsmen are real experts, also with gemstones. You’ll find them virtually everywhere in the country. Although many stones are authentic there are also some synthetic imitations on the market.

Two Powerful Healing Systems From Asia: Ayurveda And TCM

By Shiva Rao

Ayurveda is the natural healing system of India going back to ancient times. It was established by the same great seers and sages who created Yoga and meditation. Ayurvedic medicine includes herbal medicine, dietetics, body work, surgery, oil and aromatherapy, massages, psychology and spirituality. It’s the healing gift from the ancient enlightened Vedic culture.

Ayurvedic medicine has gone through different stages of development in its long history. It spread as far east as Indonesia and to the west it influenced the ancient Greeks. The Buddhists used it also, and added many new insights to it and spread it, along with their religion, to many different countries. Thus Ayurveda became the basis of the healing traditions of Tibet, Sri Lanka, Burma and other Buddhist lands.

According to Ayurvedic medicine, the human being consists of three bodies: the physical, astral and causal body. In Western terms these could be called body, mind and soul. The Ayurvedic system of diagnosis and treatment is focused on the physical, but considers the other two also. Most diseases have both physical and spiritual causes and require treatment on both levels. Ayurveda involves a holistic treatment of the entire human being and is able to help you keep a state of total well-being.

Another old health system of the world is  Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is based on the body-mind-spirit unity and on the fact that the individual is linked to a vast cosmic energy source. To Traditional Chinese Medicine health is an internal as well as an external state of balance. When there is imbalance disease manifests itself. The system is at least 2,500 years old, and probably much older.

In many Eastern health systems the life-energy “Chi” (“Qi”) plays an important role. This Chi runs through a number of meridians. In Acupuncture, which is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, these meridians and the Chi that runs  in them are influenced by fine needles. Other therapies being used in this old health system are: herbal therapy, energetic exercises, diet, massage, magnetism and relaxation.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the most powerful therapies  and is becoming more and more popular around the world. It is officially recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO), as is Ayurveda. Millions of people are enjoying its wonderful healing effects. There are schools in China, Europe and America where you can study this  ancient therapy.
